Fear of the dentist: what really helps

Short answer

Fear of the dentist is very common, and it’s best to mention it from the first visit. It helps to agree on a signal to pause, ask to have each step explained, start with something simple and book a quiet time of day. For some procedures, sedation may also be an option.

What you can ask for

  • A first appointment just to talk.
  • A hand signal to pause.
  • An explanation of what you’ll feel before each step.
  • To bring music or someone you trust.
  • To consider sedation when the case allows it.

Putting off your visit usually makes the problem worse and the treatment longer. Starting with a simple checkup helps you regain confidence.
