Zirconia crowns

Metal-free restorations that are strong and natural looking.

Two dental crowns held by a hand in a black glove

Short answer

A zirconia crown is a metal-free cap that fully covers a damaged tooth to restore its shape, strength and natural look. Zirconia is very strong and withstands high forces. It usually takes two visits, about two to three weeks apart, and crowns last 5 to 15 years or more with good care.

When you need a crown

  • A weakened or cracked tooth.
  • A large fracture or significant wear.
  • Extensive decay that a filling can’t fix.
  • After a root canal, to protect the tooth.
  • On top of an implant, as the visible tooth.

Why metal-free

Today’s restorations avoid the dark edge left by older metal-based crowns and achieve a very natural look. Several joined crowns form a bridge, which is used to replace missing teeth.

How it works

  1. Exam and X-ray.
  2. Tooth preparation and impression.
  3. Temporary crown while the final one is made.
  4. Try-in, adjustment and cementing.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A veneer covers the visible side of the tooth; a crown covers the whole tooth. Crowns are used when the tooth is more damaged.

Can a crown get a cavity?

The crown can’t, but the tooth underneath can, especially at the edge. That’s why you need to keep up with brushing, flossing and checkups.
